Contract Transport Services – The Green Way Forward
Wisconsin-based Contract Transport Services is a forward-thinking logistics company on the cutting edge of innovation, with sustainability at the heart of its operations.
Contract Transport Services (CTS), which began in 1985 as a single-truck operation doing cartage work for paper mills in Wisconsin’s Green Bay area has come a long way. Today the company is a leader in Midwest regional transportation services, with a fleet of over 150 trucks, providing exceptional, reliable transportation along with dedicated yard management in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.
The company has grown substantially under the management of Curt Reitz, the company President. He says: “Our drivers are our key strength. We value them greatly, reward them accordingly and provide consistent support so that they get home to their families every night. We have launched numerous staff incentives and do what we can to make sure that our drivers are treated well and get the respect they deserve.”
Curt, a former military veteran, is passionate about making sure his drivers are treated well by customers, something that is, by far, not to be taken for granted. He has made it a mission to provide assistance to his fellow former military peers to give them security, good jobs and meaningful existence in their new life.
“Our employees are continually acknowledged for doing their jobs well. Our truck driving professionals are held to high standards, and that means our customers can count on extraordinary service each and every time. We set out to exceed expectations, and that is what keeps us strong. Clearly, our drivers are a key aspect of this achievement.”
Green trucking initiative
In recent years, CTS has often been featured in the press with regard to its focus on green operations – an important and much-talked-about factor in the heavy-duty vehicle segment.
Curt Reitz says: “When customers choose CTS for their transportation needs, they are committing to a company that places high importance on the environment. We’ve partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency as a SmartWay affiliate to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, curb air pollution, and improve fuel efficiency for sustainability.”
“We’re proud that 100% of our entire fleet runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), which reduces customer costs and has positive impacts on the environment. In 2019, CTS was given the Forward Fleet Award by Wisconsin Clean Cities, as well as honoured by Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT) as a Top Green Fleet of 2019.”
In spring 2020, the company entered into a contract with OPAL Fuels, a producer and distributor of renewable natural gas (RNG) for heavy-duty truck fleets, a move that will significantly reduce CTS’s carbon emissions. Under the agreement, OPAL Fuels will sell 15 million gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE) of RNG to CTS and has built a station and related infrastructure at CTS’ facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“By contracting with OPAL Fuels to internalise our fuelling infrastructure, the new RNG fuel and related infrastructure will save us time, money, and significantly reduce our carbon emissions,” says Curt Reitz.
The company has also partnered with Hexagon Agility, a business of Hexagon Composites, a leading global provider of clean fuel solutions for commercial vehicles and gas transportation solutions. Their products transport clean gaseous fuels and enable vehicles to reduce emissions while saving operating costs. Sustainability is a key driver for Hexagon and their assistance to Curt and his business has been extensive over the years.
Reflecting on potential green fuels in the sector, Curt says: “Sustainability is becoming a priority in every sector including transportation, although the focus is primarily on electric. Electric trucks can at best get to carbon neutral. Our trucks run on renewable gas, processed either from landfills, wastewater treatment or farms. So, our trucks are actually carbon negative. Sadly, the green community is not pushing natural gas. If they really understand green, they would focus on natural gas solutions as that’s the best you can get.”
The fact is that renewable natural gas (RNG) is the single most impactful pathway to reducing harmful emissions from the heavy-duty transportation sector, both immediately and in the future, and it is the world’s only carbon-negative fuel.
Compared to other alternative fuels, natural gas vehicles (NGVs) deliver the most cost-effective NOx and CO2 emissions reductions, and the reductions are even more dramatic when using RNG. RNG, derived from organic waste, offers the lowest carbon intensity solution of any transportation fuel.
Purchasing over 200,000 gallons of CNG each month, CTS is proud to be moving America toward a cleaner tomorrow. “Renewable natural gas is the best alternative fuel option on the market. We are proud to say we can deliver our customers their products safely, efficiently and at the same time sustainably.”
“Unlike electric solutions that are being contemplated for heavy-duty vehicles, RNG is an option available now, not in ten- or fifteen-years’ time, and not when the infrastructure is ready in some distant future. It should get the appreciation it deserves.”
Despite the volatile transportation market and the consequences of the pandemic-related restrictions, Curt Reitz stays positive when thinking of the company’s future: “Our strong reputation for exceptional service has created double-digit growth for the past 10 years.”
“At CTS we have solid values and we focus on respectful and professional interactions. The hard work of our employees has created a good basis for further business growth ahead. And that growth will be achieved by sustainable means. It’s really a simple mindset – take care of your employees and they will take care of the business.”
